Our key areas of action to support excellence
Since late 2024, Parasports Québec has joined the “Innovate Beyond the PNCE” initiative led by the Direction du sport, du loisir et de l’activité physique (DSLAP) of the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport (MELS), and has hired its first Parasport Coach Development Lead, Patrick Côté, former head coach of Canada’s wheelchair rugby national team.
The initial months focused on understanding the program and its methods, as well as identifying the current realities and needs of parasport coaches. Alongside the launch of the mentorship phase, several projects have been rolled out in 2025:
- Adapting PNCE training for wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby
- Developing training curricula for sports that do not yet have a parasport-specific NCCP pathway
- Creating communities of practice for coaches working in similar contexts
- Launching a mentorship program aligned with each coach’s development plan
- Offering workshops and social learning sessions on current topics relevant to coaches
The Coach Development Program continues to expand across multiple parasports, with the goal of providing athletes with the best possible training environment.
Parasports Québec offers coaches the opportunity to get involved in wheelchair basketball. Through its support framework, the organization enables coaches to apply their existing skills, develop new ones, and make a meaningful impact as parasport coaches working with athletes with disabilities.
Coaches transitioning from traditional sports receive guidance to transfer their expertise while learning the specific aspects of the parasport environment.
Through this program, helping para-athletes reach their full potential and contributing to the well-being of individuals with physical impairments is within everyone’s reach.
Whether in para-athletics, powerchair soccer, basketball, curling or rugby – all in wheelchairs – Parasports Québec offers specialized training programs for officials.
Skill transfer is quick, and whether or not you have prior experience in mainstream sports, the federation provides structured, personalized support to help you grow.
In 2024–2025, Parasports Québec launched the Synergie Project, aimed at measuring the impact of an integrated support team approach on the development of parasport athletes.
The project will span two full competitive seasons and is expected to conclude in early 2027. Throughout the initiative, Parasports Québec will collaborate with researchers from the School of Management Sciences at Université du Québec à Montréal (ESG UQAM), as well as experts from the Institut national du sport du Québec (INS) and its partner network.
